Paul Filbert began his Aikido training in 1974 while a graduate student at the University of Minnesota under the direction of Darrell Tangman Sensei and Akira Tohei Shihan and was awarded the rank of shodan (1st degree black belt) by Akira Tohei Shihan in 1979. Paul relocated to the Bay Area in 1981 where he has continued his training at Aikido West under the guidance of Frank Doran Shihan. Paul has been on the instructors staff of Aikido West since 1984 and is responsible for the general class Monday night. He was awarded the rank of 5th degree black belt by Frank Doran Shihan in 2002.
